How To Turn Self-Doubt into Confidence

We've all been there at one point or another. The process of having to put ourselves out there can induce overwhelming trepidation. Elle Kaplan over at Huffington Post breaks down a few important things to consider in order to turn self-doubt into confidence.

Be mindful. Don't focus on perfection.

Harvard Psychology professor and TED Talk superstar Amy Cuddy has studied why some people are able to take more risk and portray a confident demeanor. In doing so she has found that there is some validity to the phrase "fake it til you make it". Along those lines, Cuddy says that mindfulness is a way to take hold of fear and take on self-confidence.

Minfulness allows you to process the situation from a more balanced perspective. Rather than letting your fear run rampant, mindfulness makes it possible to observe how you feel - without judging yourself for it - and then to calmly remind yourself that all will be well.

Cuddy recommends that you acknowledge what you do and don't have control over, and only focus on those things you have the ability to change.

Pretend you're  super hero

I know...sounds a little out there.

But changing your body language - for example by standing tall - not only makes you look like you have confidence, but actually induces the release of chemicals that make you feel more confident. Make a conscious effort to stand tall, shoulders wide, and express a sense of confidence.

When we're uncomfortable many people tend to immerse themselves in their smartphones. The result is often a contracted body position that can exacerbate any feelings of self-doubt we may be experiencing in the moment. Rather than bury yourself in a smartphone the next time you feel uneasy, fight the temptation. Practice standing tall instead.

Experiencing self-doubt is something that everyone goes through at one time or another. There are tried and true methods to turn self-doubt into confidence.
